Newsweek rapporte la réponse de Liu à un fan sur X/Twitter, confirmant qu'il poursuit activement le projet avec les détenteurs de droits. "Travailler avec les titulaires de droits pour amener les chiens endormis sur grand écran", a-t-il déclaré.
L'histoire du développement du film est à carreaux. Initialement annoncé en 2017 avec Donnie Yen attaché à Star, le projet a disparu un an plus tard. Récemment, Yen a confirmé son annulation, citant des années de temps, d'efforts et de fonds personnels investis, finalement contrecarré par la nature imprévisible d'Hollywood. "J'ai attendu des années ... et malheureusement ... je ne sais pas. Tu sais comment Hollywood va, non?" Yen lamenta.
L'intervention de Liu ravive l'espoir pour cette franchise d'action de Hong Kong. Cependant, le succès de son effort pour assurer les droits et réaliser le film reste incertain.
Le jeu vidéo original Sleeping Dogs , sorti sur PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 et PC, suit l'infiltration par le détective Undercover Wei Shen d'une triade de Hong Kong. Acclamé par la critique, gagnant un 8/10 de IGN, le jeu manquait étonnamment de suites.
