Kingdom Hearts Missing-Link Canceled, Square Enix Focuses on KH4

Kingdom Hearts Missing-Link, the mobile-based action RPG from Square Enix, has officially been cancelled. The game, which promised a unique GPS-driven experience set in the world of Scala ad Caelum, was originally scheduled to launch in 2024 and aimed to deliver an original story within the broader battle against the Heartless.

In a recent [ttpp]statement released via the game’s official X (formerly Twitter) account, Square Enix expressed deep regret for the cancellation, noting that the decision came after careful consideration. The company stated it "determined that it would be difficult to offer a service that players would find satisfactory over a long period of time," though specific reasons for the cancellation were not detailed.

"We wish to convey our heartfelt apologies to everyone who has been looking forward to the start of service," the message continued. "Although we worked hard on developing and adjusting the game in the hope that it would be enjoyed by many players, we determined that it would be difficult for us to offer a service that players would find satisfactory over a long period of time, leading us to the decision to cancel development."

Square Enix also took the opportunity to thank fans and participants involved in the game's multiple closed beta tests, acknowledging their support throughout the development process.

While the cancellation of Kingdom Hearts Missing-Link is certainly disappointing for fans, the statement ended with a positive note: the Kingdom Hearts series will continue. Square Enix confirmed that it is currently "hard at work on Kingdom Hearts 4" and encouraged fans to stay tuned for future updates.

This announcement marks one of the first official mentions of Kingdom Hearts 4 in several months. Despite its initial reveal in September 2022 with a cinematic trailer, details about the upcoming title have remained scarce — a trend typical of the franchise but nonetheless frustrating for eager fans.

Series director Tetsuya Nomura has previously teased that Kingdom Hearts 4 will mark a turning point in the saga, steering the narrative closer to its final chapter after more than two decades and 18 interconnected titles.
