Get ready, Guardian — Bungie has just unveiled an exciting lineup for its sci-fi shooter, Destiny 2, packed with two new expansions and significant seasonal and core game updates for both paying and free players. This content is all part of what Bungie is calling the "Year of Prophecy."
The "Year of Prophecy" is set to be a landmark year with four major content releases, including two paid expansions and two major updates accessible to all players.
Kicking things off is "Rite of the Nine," a free update that reimagines dungeon diving for both new and veteran players. Available now, this update brings familiar dungeons like Prophecy, Spire of the Watcher, and Ghosts of the Deep with unique twists, reintroducing players to Orin and featuring refreshed dungeon weapons.
Next, on July 15, comes the paid expansion "Destiny 2: The Edge of Fate," the start of a multiyear saga that will unfold across several expansions. This expansion reintroduces the Nine, enigmatic beings who predate the Traveler, and features new characters Lodi and Ikora stepping into the spotlight. Set on the new destination Kepler, inspired by Destiny 2’s dungeons and designed for deep exploration and discovery, players can expect new enemies, weapons, gear, and destination-specific abilities.
Simultaneously, on July 15, Bungie will roll out "major core game innovations." This includes revamped armor and gear systems to enhance buildcrafting opportunities and a new activity selection screen called the Portal. Players will be able to choose between Fireteam Ops, Pinnacle Ops, Crucible Ops, and the newly introduced Solo Ops. Fireteam and Pinnacle Ops focus on cooperative gameplay, while Solo Ops cater to players seeking short, self-contained sessions. Additionally, 50 new modifiers will allow for deeper gameplay customization and curated activity rotations to keep the content fresh.
As with new expansions, pre-order bonuses are available, including an instantly unlockable Exotic Ghost and Legendary Emblem. Here are the detailed pre-order options:

On September 9, the second major update, "Ash & Iron," will go live, followed by the second expansion, "Renegades," on December 2. Finally, the "Shadow & Order" major update rolls out on March 3.
"Destiny 2: Renegades" draws inspiration from the "legendary Star Wars universe," blending Destiny's unique storytelling and gameplay with elements from the iconic sci-fi franchise.
This news comes as a breath of fresh air for many Destiny 2 players, especially after Bungie's layoffs in July 2024, which affected 220 staff members, just under a year after 100 other layoffs.
While Destiny 2 continues to evolve, Bungie is also working on other projects. The reboot of the classic Bungie franchise, Marathon, was revealed in May 2023, with a more detailed look provided recently. In IGN's Marathon hands-on preview, we noted that the game shows promise in satisfying the Bungie PvP itch, with hopes high for its release on PC and consoles in September.
