Dynasty Warriors: Origins - Character Switching Guide

In Dynasty Warriors: Origins, you'll primarily guide the Wanderer on his mission to restore peace across the land. Along the way, you'll make numerous choices that shape the main storyline, and regardless of your decisions, you'll often be accompanied by powerful companions in battle.

These companions will stick with you, navigating the battlefield at your side. However, there's a unique feature allowing you to take direct control of them during specific moments. Given their strength, playing as these companions can be more advantageous than continuing as the Wanderer, even with his upgrades. Here’s how you can switch between characters.

How To Switch Characters In Dynasty Warriors: Origins

Switching to play as your companion is possible only during battles where you have one by your side. Before the fight, during the war council, you'll see an option to select your companion. You can opt to go solo, but this decision locks out the ability to switch to a companion during the battle. Once the battle starts, you'll notice your companion's health bar at the bottom right of your screen, just above your own.

Below their health bar, you'll see a blue bar, similar to your Musou bar. This bar fills up as you engage in combat, with actions such as:

  • Parrying attacks
  • Perfect dodging
  • Assaulting Officers
  • Using Weapon Arts

Virtually every combat action contributes to filling this bar, albeit at a slower pace.

When the blue bar is fully charged, a "Change Character" prompt appears next to it. To switch, hold down the "Change Character" button for about a second. This is the View Button on Xbox, the C key on PC, or the Touchpad on PlayStation.

Playing As Other Characters In Dynasty Warriors: Origins

It's best to switch to another character during the heat of a major battle, as companions are exceptionally potent. You'll only control them for roughly a minute, with the blue bar gradually draining to indicate your remaining time. Upon switching, your new character comes with full Bravery and a suite of powerful combat arts.

Switching also triggers a dramatic entrance with a large attack, so aim at an enemy to maximize impact. Your companion will have their own Musou and health bars, both fully charged, allowing you to unleash devastating special attacks on your foes.
