Dynasty Warriors: Origins: Is It Open World?

For most of its history, the *Dynasty Warriors* series has been known for its linear hack-and-slash gameplay. However, with the release of *Dynasty Warriors 9*, the franchise ventured into open-world territory. This leads to the pertinent question: Does *Dynasty Warriors: Origins* also feature an open world?

Does Dynasty Warriors: Origins Have An Open World?

No, *Dynasty Warriors: Origins* does not include an open world.

In recent years, the trend among major AAA titles has been to incorporate open-world elements, often with the assumption that this enhances the game's quality. However, this isn't always the case. A prime example is *Dynasty Warriors 9*, which introduced an expansive open world that was criticized for its lack of content. The vastness of the world diluted the impact of the series' signature large-scale battles, making them feel less engaging. This experiment demonstrated that an open world was not a necessary or beneficial addition to the *Dynasty Warriors* formula.

Given this context, fans were curious whether *Dynasty Warriors: Origins* would continue this trend, especially considering its more experimental approach. Fortunately, the game does not feature an open world. Instead, it offers an overworld for navigation between missions.

In *Dynasty Warriors: Origins*, players can explore a compact map of ancient China, moving from town to town to buy weapons and items, and rest at inns. These maps are small, allowing players to traverse them quickly—typically in less than a minute. A fast travel system is available, though it's rarely necessary due to the map's size. Within this overworld, players can interact with NPCs to start side quests, find items such as Pyroxene and Old Coins, engage in optional battles to increase proficiency and recruit new soldiers, and trigger cutscenes to advance the story. While this overworld system is straightforward and doesn't add significant depth to the gameplay, it is a much more streamlined and effective approach compared to an expansive, empty open world.

*Dynasty Warriors: Origins* is now available on PS5, PC, and Xbox Series X/S.
