In 2024, the Meta Quest 3S emerged as the best-selling console on Amazon, surpassing established giants like Xbox, PlayStation, and the Nintendo Switch. This achievement is particularly noteworthy given that the Meta Quest 3S was only launched in October of the same year.
The Meta Quest 3S is a budget-friendly version of the Meta Quest 3, offering a more accessible price point in exchange for slightly reduced specifications. Despite virtual reality not yet being a mainstream gaming option, the affordability and robust selection of games available for the Meta Quest 3S have propelled it to the top of Amazon's sales charts for 2024.
According to Amazon's best-seller list for 2024, the Meta Quest 3S topped the video game console category. It secured the #11 spot on the overall video game list, which was primarily dominated by gift cards and Xbox Game Pass subscriptions. The PlayStation 5 Slim ranked at #17, while the Nintendo Switch was at #53. Notably, Xbox consoles did not make it into the top 80, although their peripherals did. The PlayStation 5 Pro was also absent from the list. The only items that outsold the Meta Quest 3S were a Nintendo-branded microSDXC card at #8 and the PlayStation DualSense wireless controller at #9.
Meta Quest 3S Makes Virtual Reality More Accessible Than Ever
Sony's PlayStation VR 2 did not appear on Amazon's top list, despite its own impressive library of games. The Meta Quest 3S's ability to function independently, without the need for an external device, likely contributes to its appeal. This not only allows for untethered movement but also eliminates the need for an additional investment in a powerful console or PC.
The list also featured the Meta Quest 2 at #27, while the original Meta Quest 3 did not make the top 80. This suggests that consumers are more inclined towards VR devices at a lower price point. With the Meta Quest 2 now discontinued and the anticipated release of the Nintendo Switch 2 in 2025, it will be intriguing to see how the sales landscape evolves. If Nintendo can replicate the success of the original Switch, it could potentially dominate Amazon's video game sales in 2025. The 2024 results underscore a gradual but steady increase in interest in virtual reality.
