The Google Streamer 4K is currently on sale for the first time ever, available for just $79.99 at Amazon and other retailers. This device stands out as one of the premier Android-based 4K streaming solutions on the market today. It offers a compelling alternative to pricier options like the Apple TV, Roku Ultra, and Nvidia Shield TV Pro, providing advanced features such as smart hub functionality and Thread compatibility at a more affordable price point.

The Google Streamer 4K, launched in September 2024, serves as the successor to the Chromecast 4K and boasts significant upgrades. Google asserts that its new processor is up to 22% faster, equipped with double the memory (2GB) and quadruple the onboard storage (32GB). Connectivity options include high-speed 802.11ac Wi-Fi and gigabit Ethernet. The device now uses a USB Type-C port for power, simplifying the search for a replacement power brick if needed. Additionally, if you misplace the newly redesigned remote, you can easily locate it using the remote-finder button on the main unit.
Like its high-end counterparts, the Google Streamer 4K supports streaming in up to 4K resolution with HDR, including Dolby Vision, HDR10, and HDR10+ formats. Although equipped with an HDMI 2.1 port, it is limited to 4K at 60fps. It also supports Dolby Atmos for enhanced audio experiences when paired with compatible speakers such as the Sonos Arc. Beyond streaming, the Google Streamer 4K doubles as a smart home controller, serving as both a Thread border router and a Matter hub.
Compared to the Apple TV and Roku Ultra, the Google Streamer 4K offers a similar feature set at a lower price. While the Amazon Fire TV Stick 4K Max is cheaper, the Android TV interface on the Google Streamer is more user-friendly and free of Amazon ads. The Nvidia Shield TV Pro is a superior streaming option but retails for $200. Considering its smart home capabilities and compatibility with Matter and Thread, the Google Streamer 4K presents an exceptional value.
If you're looking to try out streaming services before committing, consider the free trials offered by Hulu, Paramount+, Apple TV+, and Crunchyroll. These trials give you ample time to explore their content without immediate cost.
For those ready to subscribe, the Disney+/Hulu/ESPN+ bundle at $16.99 per month is a top choice. Disney Plus, included in this bundle, offers a vast array of high-quality content ranging from classic Disney animations to the latest Marvel and Star Wars series, and exceptional kids' programming like Bluey. With the upcoming release of Andor season 2 on April 22, Disney Plus continues to be a must-have streaming service.
