MageTrain: Fast-Paced Pixel Art Roguelike Now on Android
May 02,2025Author: Penelope
Tidepool Games has just released a thrilling new game on Android called MageTrain, a fast-paced, pixel art 'snakelike' roguelike that echoes the gameplay of Nimble Quest. If you're familiar with Nimble Quest, you'll find MageTrain's mechanics strikingly similar as it takes heavy inspiration from it.
What’s MageTrain Like?
MageTrain combines the classic gameplay of Snake with elements of auto-battlers and roguelikes. You control a line of heroes, reminiscent of a snake, navigating through arenas. Each hero autonomously attacks as you maneuver them, requiring you to strategically position them to avoid enemies and obstacles. The placement of heroes in the line is crucial as their abilities shift depending on whether they're leading or following.
At launch, the game offers nine heroes, including one who uniquely throws birds. Each hero brings different skills to the table, influenced by their position in the train. Players can explore eight distinct dungeons, confront 28 types of enemies, and harness 30 skills to enhance their team. Gold and power-ups collected during gameplay further enrich your strategy.
MageTrain's roguelike nature ensures that every run is unique. You'll navigate branching paths, make critical upgrade choices, and aim to survive as long as possible. Similar to games like Slay the Spire or FTL, there are no fixed levels, and progress cannot be saved; any mistake means starting over.
It Isn’t Slow-Paced
The excitement of MageTrain lies in the progression you experience with each attempt, even if you don't succeed. You'll quickly learn when to adopt a cautious approach, when to launch an all-out attack, and when to simply hold on for another 30 seconds.
MageTrain is now available to download for free on the Google Play Store. Don't miss out on this engaging game that promises to keep you on your toes!
