Mario Kart World's Free Roam Mode: An Open World Adventure with Friends

May 26,2025 Author: Adam

Today's Mario Kart World Direct provided exciting new details about the game's innovative Free Roam mode, shedding light on its multiplayer capabilities and the activities players can enjoy while exploring Mario Kart World's expansive environment.

PlayAlthough we had the chance to go hands-on with Mario Kart World last week, it wasn't until today's Direct that we got a comprehensive look at Free Roam mode. This new feature allows players to freely explore the game's vast, Forza Horizon-inspired world map. Unlike previous Mario Kart titles where race tracks were isolated and accessible only during races, Mario Kart World integrates these tracks into an open world, enabling players to drive from one track to another and enjoy the areas in between during certain game modes.

When not engaged in racing, Free Roam mode offers a delightful mini-adventure. The world is dotted with hidden collectibles such as coins and ? panels, though the exact benefits of collecting these items remain a mystery for now. Players can also find P-Switches, which, when activated, trigger small challenges like gathering blue coins.

Moreover, Free Roam mode includes a Photo Mode feature, allowing players to capture images of their racers in various poses and angles at any time. This mode isn't limited to solo play; it's designed to be a social experience. You and your friends can explore the world together, take photos, tackle challenges, or simply hang out. Free Roam supports up to four players on the same system through split-screen mode, and up to eight players via local wireless play, with a maximum of two players per system.

The Mario Kart World Direct also unveiled a range of other features, including new characters, courses, and modes. For a complete overview of all the announcements, you can check out the detailed coverage [ttpp]here[ttpp].
