What is a Bow in Minecraft?

A bow in Minecraft is a ranged weapon that allows players to engage enemies from a safe distance. However, not all foes are easily dispatched from afar; for instance, the Warden has its own ranged attacks, necessitating strategic combat. Additionally, certain mobs like Skeletons, Strays, and Illusioners can also wield bows, with Skeletons posing a significant threat early in the game.

How to Make a Bow in Minecraft
Crafting a bow requires:
- 3 Strings
- 3 Sticks
Once you have these materials, arrange them on a crafting table as shown in the image below.

If you have two damaged bows, you can repair them without needing strings or sticks. Combine the two bows to create a new one with the combined durability of the damaged ones, plus an additional 5% durability bonus.
Get a Bow from a Villager
You can also acquire a bow without crafting. An "apprentice" level Fletcher villager will sell a regular bow for 2 emeralds. An "expert" level Fletcher offers an enchanted bow, but at a higher price, ranging from 7 to 21 emeralds.

Another method to obtain a bow is by defeating Skeletons or Strays, which may drop bows upon death. The drop rate is only 8.5%, but you can increase your chances by enchanting your sword with "Looting," boosting the probability to 11.5%.

Beyond its use as a weapon, a bow is also necessary for crafting a Dispenser. You'll need:
- 1 Bow
- 7 Cobblestones
- 1 Redstone Dust

Arrows in Minecraft

Using a Bow in Minecraft
To use a bow, equip it and ensure you have arrows in your inventory. To shoot, press and hold the right mouse button to draw the bowstring, then release to fire. The longer you draw the bowstring, the higher the damage, with a fully drawn bow dealing 6 damage after one second, and up to 11 damage if held longer.
The arrow's flight distance depends on the bow's draw strength and the angle of elevation. In lava or underwater, arrows travel slower and cover less distance. For maximum range (about 120 blocks), fully draw the bow and shoot at a 45-degree angle upward. Shooting vertically upward with full draw strength reaches a height of about 66 blocks.
To enhance arrows, combine:
- 8 Arrows
- Any Lingering Potion

These enhanced arrows apply the potion's effect upon impact, lasting ⅛ of the potion's duration. Note that even with the "Infinity" enchantment, the ammo for these arrows remains limited.
In Java Edition, you can also craft Spectral Arrows, which illuminate a small area upon impact. To make them, combine:
- 1 Regular Arrow
- 4 Glowstone Dust
