We’ve all played Tetris. The iconic puzzle game where you skillfully arrange falling blocks into neat lines that vanish – it's a familiar pastime for many. Over the years, the series has seen countless core entries and hundreds of spinoffs, making new titles using the core Tetris mechanics potentially feel repetitive. However, Minetris stands out as a premium mobile game that cleverly uses these mechanics to craft a unique experience.
How So?
Minetris isn’t just another high score chase; it transforms the classic block-busting gameplay into an adventurous journey deep into the tombs of a pyramid. As the game’s developer Carlo Barbarino explains, “The goal isn’t just to break blocks, it’s to uncover the secrets hidden within the pyramid. There’s a story where the Pharaoh of Light is trapped under a curse and must be freed. With every game played, the Pharaoh regains life, and the ancient pyramid will transform back into its former glory, vibrant and renewed.” This narrative-driven approach ensures that Minetris is not just a fleeting experience, but one you’ll eagerly return to day after day to explore new secrets and sights.
Dynamic Puzzling

Of course, a compelling narrative isn’t enough if the gameplay doesn’t feel right. We’ve all encountered versions of Tetris or other major puzzlers where the controls were unresponsive or introduced unnecessary complications that detracted from the experience. Fortunately, Minetris doesn’t suffer from these issues. Barbarino shares, “I always enjoyed the classic Tetris, but found it a bit disappointing that the scene remained static and lacked a storyline. I often came across reimagined versions of Tetris showcasing dramatic visuals where blocks appeared to explode or break apart—features that weren’t actually part of the gameplay. So, I decided to create my own version that brings those dynamic elements to life.”
In Minetris, when you clear lines, the blocks genuinely explode, adding a satisfying tactile feel to the gameplay. Combined with atmospheric music and dynamic camera movements as you delve deeper into the pyramid, Minetris offers one of the most engaging and intriguing versions of Tetris we’ve ever experienced.
Any Advice?

Having spent some time with Minetris and after speaking with Barbarino, we’ve gathered a few tips to help new players. One crucial piece of advice is to keep the mined area as clear as possible, as this is key for quickly breaking down the wall. Additionally, take advantage of the feature that allows you to see the next two blocks coming. Knowing what's on the horizon – especially early on – can be used to devastating effect. There’s also a feature called Cascade Gravity, which enables split blocks to fall. It’s best to plan ahead and anticipate which parts of a block might drop when you clear a line.
Anything Else?
Yes! Minetris is not a game that will be left behind. Barbarino plans to continuously update and enhance the game. Recent updates have already improved the UI and added more content. Moreover, Minetris is a premium experience available on Android and iOS for a modest $0.99, ensuring an ad-free environment that allows you to fully immerse yourself in its mysterious world. For those unsure, there’s a lite version available on Android to try before you commit to the full purchase.
