Minecraft marked its 15th anniversary last year, yet despite entering its challenging teenage phase, developer Mojang has no intention of launching a sequel.
During a recent visit to the Stockholm studio, IGN inquired about the potential for a follow-up to the all-time best-selling game. Ingela Garneij, executive producer of Minecraft Vanilla, offered a concise and witty response: “Do you expect an Earth 2? No, there’s no Minecraft 2.”
While a Minecraft 2.0 is clearly not in development, the iconic survival-crafting game is far from stagnant. Mojang has ambitious plans to extend its lifespan significantly, aiming to at least double its current 15-year run.
“We’ve been around for 15 years,” Garneij noted. “Our goal is to thrive for at least another 15 years. Together with Agnes [Larsson, Minecraft Vanilla’s game director], we’re shaping the game’s vision and strategy for the long haul.”
Mojang’s drive to innovate fuels this ambition, building fresh ideas on the game’s robust foundation. However, Garneij acknowledged that the game’s age presents challenges, as its 15-year-old technology can slow development. While an engine overhaul isn’t planned, implementing updates like the newly announced Vibrant Visuals graphics enhancement requires significant effort.
“The game’s age is a hurdle,” Garneij explained. “It’s built on 15-year-old technology, which can limit us compared to newer games with modern engines. The platform’s age and tech are our biggest obstacles.”
Still, Minecraft remains a global gaming powerhouse with no signs of losing momentum. Mojang has no plans to shift to a free-to-play model or integrate generative AI. A sequel may not be in the cards, but the game’s evolution continues unabated.
