Nintendo Content Guidelines Threatens to Ban Creators Over Stricter Rules

Nintendo has recently tightened its Content Guidelines, imposing stricter rules on content creators. Failure to adhere to these guidelines could result in severe penalties, including bans from ever sharing Nintendo-related content online.

Nintendo Content Guidelines Threatens to Ban Creators Over Stricter Rules

Nintendo has introduced stricter guidelines in their "Game Content Guidelines for Online Video & Image Sharing Platforms" this September 2, requiring content creators to adhere to more stringent rules in sharing Nintendo-related content online.

With the updated content guidelines, Nintendo has expanded its enforcement. Not only can they issue DMCA takedowns for content that violates these rules, but they can also proactively remove content that breaches their guidelines and restrict the creator's further sharing of Nintendo game content. Previously, Nintendo could only object to content that was deemed "unlawful, infringing, or inappropriate." This essentially means that content creators found violating these rules could get banned from showing Nintendo-related content on their platforms.

While "unlawful, infringing, or inappropriate" can encompass a wide range of content, Nintendo has provided examples in their guidelines’ FAQ. Notably, they’ve added two new examples to their list of prohibited content:

⚫︎ Involves actions that may be considered to impair the gameplay experience in multiplayer modes, such as intentionally disrupting game progress;

⚫︎ Features graphic, explicit, harmful, or otherwise offensive content, including statements or actions that may be considered offensive, insulting, obscene or otherwise disturbing to others;

These stricter guidelines came following reported incidents of takedowns from Nintendo. It’s speculated that the latest revised measure against content Nintendo deems offensive was done perhaps due to a recent incident involving a Splatoon 3 content creator.

Nintendo Takes Down Splatoon 3 Video Featuring Suggestive Content

Nintendo has recently removed a Splatoon 3 video by content creator Liora Channel that featured interviews with female players discussing their dating experiences within the game. The video, uploaded on August 22, delved into the personal lives of these players, including their experiences with casual encounters involving high-profile Splatoon 3 players.

According to Liora Channel, Nintendo found this video unacceptable. In response, Liora Channel has publicly stated on Twitter (X) that they will avoid creating sexually suggestive content related to Nintendo games in the future.

These new updates are understandable, given the heightened risk of predatory behavior in online games, especially among younger players. Promoting sexual encounters in games targeting a young audience can lead to serious consequences. For instance, according to Bloomberg, there have been numerous instances in Roblox where individuals have been arrested for "abducting or abusing victims they’d met or groomed" through the game.

Given the influential role content creators play, it’s crucial that Nintendo’s games not be associated with such harmful activities, as this could jeopardize the safety of young people.
