Exciting news for fans of the iconic franchise: a live-action Power Rangers series is reportedly in the works for Disney+. According to The Wrap, the creative minds behind Percy Jackson and the Olympians, Jonathan E. Steinberg and Dan Shotz, are in discussions to write, showrun, and produce this thrilling new take on the beloved series for Disney+ and 20th Century TV.
Hasbro, the current owner of the Power Rangers, aims to revitalize the franchise for a new generation while keeping its existing fanbase engaged and excited. This move signals a fresh start for the series that captured the hearts of '90s kids with The Mighty Morphin’ Power Rangers, which featured teenage superheroes and their impressive mechs capable of combining into a colossal fighting machine.
In 2018, Hasbro acquired the Power Rangers from Saban Properties in a significant $522 million deal. At the time, Hasbro's chairman and CEO, Brian Goldner, highlighted the brand's "tremendous upside potential" and its vast opportunities across various platforms, including toys, games, consumer products, digital gaming, entertainment, and a global retail presence.
This acquisition followed the unsuccessful 2017 movie reboot, which attempted a grittier take on the Power Rangers universe. Despite intentions to launch a series of sequels, the project was abandoned due to underwhelming box office results, prompting Saban to sell the rights to Hasbro shortly thereafter.
Hasbro is not stopping with Power Rangers. They are also working on other ambitious projects, including a live-action Dungeons & Dragons series titled The Forgotten Realms for Netflix, an animated Magic: The Gathering series also in development at Netflix, and plans for a Magic: The Gathering cinematic universe. These initiatives showcase Hasbro's commitment to expanding its entertainment portfolio and bringing beloved franchises to new audiences.
