Talempong Pacik and Tambua Tansa: Minang Artistic Expressions

A diverse range of traditional arts continues to thrive, including tambua tansa, the piring (plate) dance, the spectacular piring dance performed on broken glass, randai theater, saluang flute music, talempong percussion, rice-stem pupuik wind instruments, and ceremonial arts of sprouts.

Tambua Tansa, in particular, is deeply ingrained in community celebrations. Its presence is also a common feature at official government events, where it energizes the atmosphere.

While Tambua Tansa is practiced widely across the nagari (villages) of Agam Regency, it has developed most prominently in the areas surrounding Lake Maninjau and within Lubuk Basung District.

The Tansa is a smaller, command drum struck with two special rattan sticks. It directs the larger Tambua ensemble, with the Tansa dancer—the group's leader—signaling which song or rhythm to play next.

The Tambua drums themselves are crafted from a specific type of hollowed-out wood. They come in various sizes. The large type, known as Tambadang Gadang, has a diameter of approximately 50 to 60 cm. The smaller variety, called Tambua Kaciak (small drum), measures 25 to 30 cm across. A typical ensemble features between 6 and 12 Tambua drums.

The function of Tambua Tansa extends to gathering communities. It is traditionally used to call people together for gotong royong (communal work), such as road construction or the building of other public facilities.

Typically, the group leader or a local village elder will perform the Tambua Tansa at the worksite early in the morning. The thunderous sound serves as a compelling summons, ensuring participants arrive promptly.

Even after work commences, the Tambua Tansa continues to play a vital role in motivating the laborers. The rhythms become lively and spirited, often accompanied by the sound of rice-stem pupuik and the cheerful shouts of the workers. This collective energy helps counteract feelings of fatigue and the heat of the sun.

At weddings and other major festivities, Tambua Tansa is essential for creating a vibrant, celebratory mood. The event would feel incomplete without its powerful resonance.

Tambua Tansa is also employed to formally welcome distinguished guests. This includes official visits to the nagari by figures such as the regent, deputy regent, police chief, governor, district heads, and others.

Music
