Love and Deepspace is set to enhance its security measures in China by introducing a face verification system in April 2025. While it may sound intense, it's part of a broader effort to comply with China's stringent regulations on online gaming, especially concerning minors.
The introduction of face verification in Love and Deepspace is not a significant change for Chinese players, given China's existing strict real-name authentication for online games. This measure aims to prevent minors from accessing games rated 18+, a category into which Love and Deepspace falls in China. It aligns with China's ongoing efforts to combat gaming addiction among minors under the Minors’ Protection Law. For years, China has been implementing various controls over the gaming industry, including strict playtime limits for minors: 90 minutes on weekdays and three hours on weekends.
Additionally, games are required to display 'Healthy Gaming Advice' before players start, urging them to take breaks and avoid excessive gaming. Facial recognition is already integrated into daily life in China, used for security purposes in places like airports and banks, making this new measure a natural extension of existing practices.
For players outside of China, this change will likely have no impact. The verification systems are tailored to meet China’s specific regulations, and Love and Deepspace remains rated 12+ in most global app stores. Therefore, it's unlikely that a face verification system will be implemented for the global version in the future.
