Age of Empires Mobile adds new Mercenary troops system

Apr 02,2025 Author: Anthony

Ever dreamed of witnessing Joan of Arc leading Roman Centurions into battle or Hannibal Barca deploying Japanese Samurai to conquer Rome? With the latest update to Age of Empires Mobile, you can turn these historical fantasies into reality with the introduction of the new Mercenary Troops system.

At level 26, players will unlock the Mercenary Camp, a new structure that enables them to contract and recruit powerful units from other factions. Not only can you hire these warriors, but you can also unlock and upgrade technology to enhance their capabilities on the battlefield. To kick things off, a new event is live, allowing you to secure your first mercenaries for free.

The Mercenary Troops system introduces a diverse lineup of units including Byzantine Cataphracts, Swiss Pikemen, Persian Immortals, Indian Battle Elephants, Roman Centurions, Egyptian Chariot Archers, Japanese Samurai, and Korean Archers. Each of these units comes with unlockable technology to boost their already impressive battlefield prowess.

This new feature evokes memories of the Total War series, where hiring mercenaries was a strategic move to overwhelm opponents. While this addition brings excitement, it might be divisive among players, as some may worry about its impact on game balance.

Only time will tell how the Mercenary Troops system will be received by the community. There's also speculation about future additions, such as custom units like the historical Landsknechts. For now, we'll have to wait and see how this unfolds.
