Edward Berger's riveting papal thriller Conclave captivated audiences last year, offering unprecedented insight into Catholicism's most sacred electoral ritual - the selection of a new pope. As cardinals worldwide prepare for an actual papal conclave, the film's influence has become astonishingly apparent, with several participating religious leaders reportedly turning to the cinematic depiction for procedural guidance.
A Vatican official involved in conclave preparations told Politico that Berger's film - starring Ralph Fiennes as the Dean of the College of Cardinals - has been praised for its striking authenticity by current cardinals. The source confirmed some participating prelates have privately screened the movie in theaters.
Pope Francis's passing in late April, just months after the film's release, initiated the real-world conclave process. Starting May 7, 133 senior clerics will convene in the Sistine Chapel to elect Catholicism's next global leader.Remarkably, most cardinals attending this conclave were personally appointed by Francis and have never participated in this centuries-old ritual before. For these first-time electors - particularly those from remote dioceses - Berger's meticulously researched cinematic portrayal provides invaluable ceremonial insights unavailable through traditional channels.
