Borderlands 4 State of Play: New Details Unveiled
20-Minute Gameplay Deep Dive Video
The Borderlands 4 State of Play, streamed on April 30, 2025, as part of PlayStation's latest edition, offered a comprehensive look at the upcoming looter shooter. The gameplay deep dive video introduced two of the four new Vault Hunters: Vex the Siren, who harnesses supernatural phase energy to empower herself and summon deadly minions, and Rafa the Exo-Soldier, a former Tediore trooper equipped with an experimental exo-suit that can digistruct an arsenal of weapons.

The video also introduced players to the new planet of Kairos, a world fraught with warring factions, lethal fauna, and desperate inhabitants, all under the oppressive rule of the Timekeeper. Players will embark on a mission to spark a revolution against this tyrant, engaging with unique factions and recruiting them to their cause. Fan-favorite characters like Claptrap, Moxxi, and Zane return to assist in this epic quest.
Moreover, new gameplay elements were showcased, including the innovative licensed Parts system, which allows players to mix and match weapon behaviors and abilities. Additional features include new Gear slots for more specialized builds and the introduction of the Digirunner, a new vehicle for traversing the game's vast landscapes.
Gearbox Denies Launch Date Change Influenced by Other Games
Prior to the State of Play, Gearbox Software announced a two-week advancement in Borderlands 4's release date, attributing it to the game's "incredible development work." Despite this explanation, speculation abounds among fans, many of whom point to potential scheduling conflicts with Grand Theft Auto 6 (GTA 6).
Both Gearbox Software and Rockstar Games, the developers behind Borderlands and GTA respectively, are subsidiaries of Take-Two Interactive. This connection led fans to speculate about corporate influence on release schedules, especially after Take-Two's statement regarding their game release windows.

During Take-Two Interactive's earnings call in November 2024, the company confirmed plans to launch GTA 6 in Fall 2025. Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick emphasized that this would not conflict with Borderlands 4's release window, planned for the 2026 fiscal year (April 1, 2025, to March 31, 2026). In an interview with Variety in November 2024, Zelnick clarified, "I think it’s safe to say that we wouldn’t, and no one would, stack up huge releases unnecessarily."
However, Gearbox Entertainment CEO Randy Pitchford took to Twitter (X) on April 30 to address these speculations directly. He affirmed that the decision to advance the release date was "literally 0% about any other product’s actual or theoretical launch date," emphasizing the studio's confidence in their product.
Regardless of the reasons behind the date change, fans can look forward to an earlier-than-expected release of Borderlands 4, set for September 12, 2025, on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch 2, and PC.
