Assassin’s Creed Shadows Now Up to 3 Million Players, but Still No Sales Figure From Ubisoft

Apr 11,2025 Author: Matthew

Since its launch on May 20, Assassin’s Creed Shadows has captivated over 3 million players within just seven days, surpassing the initial player counts of both Origins and Odyssey. This milestone reflects a strong start for the game, which saw an increase from the 2 million players reported on its second day.

Ubisoft has shared additional statistics that highlight Shadows' impressive opening weekend performance. The game achieved the second highest day one sales revenue in the Assassin's Creed franchise, trailing only behind Valhalla. It also became the biggest Ubisoft day one seller on the PlayStation Store and has accumulated over 40 million hours of playtime so far.

The launch of Assassin’s Creed Shadows comes at a critical time for Ubisoft, following a series of challenges including delays, the sales disappointment of Star Wars Outlaws, and other setbacks such as high-profile flops, layoffs, studio closures, and game cancellations. The pressure on Shadows to succeed globally is immense, especially with reports that the Guillemot family, Ubisoft's founders, were exploring buyout deals with investors like Tencent to maintain control over the company's intellectual property.

On Steam, Shadows set a new record for the Assassin's Creed series, reaching a peak of 64,825 concurrent players over the weekend. This is the highest for the franchise on the platform since Odyssey in 2018. For context, Dragon Age: The Veilguard by BioWare peaked at 89,418 players on Steam.

While Shadows has shown strong player engagement, it's challenging to determine if it meets Ubisoft's expectations without specific revenue or sales figures. The financial success of Assassin’s Creed Shadows will be crucial not only for the game but for Ubisoft's future, with more clarity expected in the company's upcoming financial reports.
