Blizzard Welcomes Marvel Rivals, Acknowledges Similar Game Dynamics

May 12,2025 Author: Anthony

Since its reveal, Marvel Rivals has drawn inevitable comparisons to Overwatch, given their striking similarities. Both games are competitive multiplayer hero shooters, featuring comparable mechanics and gameplay systems. While Overwatch boasts a roster of unique heroes, Marvel Rivals brings Marvel's iconic heroes and villains into the fray. Both titles operate on a free-to-play model with live service monetization, regularly introducing new characters to keep the gameplay fresh and engaging.

Since its December launch, Marvel Rivals has seen explosive growth, reportedly at the expense of Overwatch 2's player base. The narrative suggests that Blizzard's game is losing ground as NetEase's Marvel Rivals captures a significant portion of its audience.

In a recent interview with GamesRadar, Overwatch 2 director Aaron Keller addressed the new competitive landscape. He acknowledged the unprecedented situation where another game so closely mirrors Overwatch's concept. Surprisingly, Keller described the situation as "exciting" and praised Marvel Rivals for taking Overwatch's established ideas in new directions. However, he admitted that Marvel Rivals' success has prompted a shift in Blizzard's approach to Overwatch 2, moving away from playing it safe.

In response, Blizzard has announced significant changes for Overwatch 2 in 2025. Alongside expected new content, the game will undergo core gameplay shifts, including the introduction of hero perks and the return of loot boxes. These changes aim to reignite interest in the game, which debuted in 2016, with Overwatch 2 launching two-and-a-half years ago. Although Blizzard keeps player numbers private, Steam's concurrent player count for Overwatch 2 has hit historic lows, peaking at 37,046 over the last 24 hours. In contrast, Marvel Rivals maintains its position among Steam's top 10 most-played games, with a 24-hour peak of 310,287 players.

Overwatch 2's user review rating on Steam remains 'mostly negative.' The game faced significant backlash in August 2023, becoming the worst user-reviewed game on the platform due to contentious monetization practices. Blizzard's decision to update the premium Overwatch into a free-to-play sequel, Overwatch 2, in 2022, made the original unplayable and sparked widespread criticism. Further controversies, including the cancellation of the long-awaited PvE Hero mode, which many believed justified the sequel, have compounded the game's challenges.
