Players will embody Coen, the Dawnwalker protagonist, navigating the dual realms of day and night in the 14th-century Medieval European-inspired land of Vale Sangora. Narrative director Jakub Szamalek introduced Coen as an atypical protagonist, describing him as "a young guy who at heart is emotional, he can get vulnerable, he’s honest about how he feels." The game's trailer introduces Coen's confrontation with the antagonist Brencis, an ancient vampire who has usurped control over Vale Sangora. In this crumbling world, Coen's mission is to save his family within the tight timeframe of 30 days and 30 nights, although the developers have noted that the in-game time progression will allow for extensive gameplay.

Rebel Wolves clarifies that Dawnwalkers are not merely a hybrid of human and vampire but a unique entity. Contrary to typical fantasy settings, the magic in The Blood of Dawnwalker is subdued and rare, centered around the occult—rituals, amulets, relics, and summonings—rather than conventional spells like fireballs or lightning bolts.
Coen, afflicted with the curse of silver poisoning, embarks on a quest to save his family from an ominous fate. The developers have crafted a "narrative sandbox" that prioritizes player agency and freedom. The game offers a nonlinear experience with a singular goal achievable through countless narrative paths and world exploration.
To maintain the integrity of the single-player campaign, there will be no multiplayer or co-op mode. However, Coen's journey will not be solitary, as he can form romantic connections with various characters, including uriashi, kobolds, and potentially even werewolves.
Rebel Wolves, led by former CD Projekt Red developers with experience on titles like The Witcher 3 and Cyberpunk 2077, has yet to confirm a release date for The Blood of Dawnwalker. The game is slated for release on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S.
