The critically acclaimed Shōgun, recipient of 18 Emmy Awards and 4 Golden Globes, is officially returning for a second season. FX has confirmed that Cosmo Jarvis will reprise his role as English pilot John Blackthorne in Season 2 while also joining the production team as co-executive producer.
Series lead Hiroyuki Sanada, who previously committed to Season 2 when the initially limited series was renewed last May, has been elevated to executive producer following his producing role in the first season. Production is scheduled to begin in January 2026 in Vancouver, where the first season filmed.
FX describes the upcoming season as "a completely original continuation" of the story rather than a direct adaptation of James Clavell's novel. The network elaborated on the connection between seasons:
"Season one depicted Lord Yoshii Toranaga's (Sanada) struggle for survival against the united Council of Regents. The discovery of John Blackthorne (Jarvis) and his European ship provided Toranaga with strategic advantages that ultimately helped determine the outcome of a historic civil war."
"Season two picks up a decade later, continuing the historically-inspired story of these two men from vastly different cultures whose destinies remain deeply connected."
While hopeful fans might see new episodes by late 2026, the production team asks for patience as they prepare this highly anticipated continuation of the award-winning series.
