Crytek, the renowned game developer, has announced layoffs impacting 60 of its 400 employees, which represents 15% of its workforce. In a tweet, the company explained that despite the growth of their popular game, Hunt: Showdown, they could not "continue as before and remain financially sustainable." As part of cost-cutting measures, Crytek had already put Crysis 4 "on hold" in late 2024 and attempted to shift staff to work on Hunt: Showdown. However, these efforts were not enough to prevent the layoffs, which affected staff across their development teams and shared services. Crytek has committed to providing severance packages to those affected.
Avni Yerli, the founder of Crytek, issued a full statement addressing the situation. He highlighted the challenging market dynamics impacting the gaming industry and the difficult decision to lay off employees. Despite the pause on Crysis 4 development in the third quarter of 2024, Yerli noted their efforts to transition developers to Hunt: Showdown 1896. He emphasized Crytek's belief in their future, particularly with Hunt: Showdown 1896, and their commitment to expanding and evolving the game with new content while continuing to develop their engine, CRYENGINE.
Last year, a battle royale-inspired Crysis project codenamed Crysis Next surfaced when early gameplay footage leaked on YouTube. The footage showcased third-person shooting in a basic warm-up arena, featuring Crysis' signature abilities and sound effects. Crytek never officially announced Crysis Next, choosing instead to focus on Crysis 4, which was announced in January 2022.
The Crysis series is celebrated for its groundbreaking first-person sci-fi shooter gameplay, renowned for its stunning visuals, innovative nanosuit powers, and expansive gameplay. The original Crysis, released in 2007, became a benchmark for PC performance due to its high system requirements, leading to the famous question, "But can it run Crysis?" used to assess PC capabilities. The latest mainline entry, Crysis 3, was released in February 2013. While Crytek has released remastered versions of the original games, fans have been eagerly awaiting updates on Crysis 4 since its announcement and teaser three years ago.
