Nintendo Direct/Indie World Showcase Recap
As predicted by some sources, Nintendo surprised us with a last-minute Nintendo Direct! We got a jam-packed 40-minute presentation covering partner showcases and Indie World highlights. While primarily focusing on third-party titles and indie games, the Direct did not feature any new first-party announcements or news regarding the next-generation Switch console. You can watch the full presentation above, and we'll provide a detailed summary of the key announcements tomorrow.
Reviews & Mini-Views
EGGCONSOLE Star Trader PC-8801mkIIsr ($6.49)
This unlocalized EGGCONSOLE release presents a familiar dilemma: is the game enjoyable despite the language barrier? Star Trader blends adventure and side-scrolling shooter elements, but neither aspect fully shines. The adventure segments feature appealing artwork and a unique narrative approach, involving quests and interactions that reward players with funds to upgrade their ship. These upgrades are crucial for navigating the challenging shooting stages.
However, the shooting sections suffer from the PC-8801's limited scrolling capabilities, resulting in a jerky, less-than-ideal experience. The game's structure is unclear, with neither genre clearly taking precedence. Ultimately, Star Trader is more intriguing than genuinely good. The significant amount of Japanese text makes the adventure elements inaccessible to Western players, severely impacting enjoyment and progression. While some brute-forcing might be possible, it's not recommended.
Star Trader offers a glimpse into gaming history, showcasing Falcom experimenting outside their usual style. Sadly, the heavy use of Japanese text significantly hinders its appeal for non-Japanese speakers. While it might offer some limited entertainment, a strong recommendation is difficult to give.

Crypt Custodian ($19.99)
This top-down action-adventure follows Pluto, a recently deceased cat who must eternally clean after a run-in with the Afterlife Guardian. Explore, battle enemies using a broom, meet unique characters, defeat bosses, and upgrade abilities. If you enjoy this genre, Crypt Custodian is worth checking out.
