The upcoming Monopoly movie from Lionsgate has secured its writers, John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein, who are known for their work on Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves. Announced today, Daley and Goldstein will pen the screenplay for this film adaptation of Hasbro's iconic board game. The project is being produced by Margot Robbie through her production company, LuckyChap.
In addition to their work on Honor Among Thieves, Daley and Goldstein recently wrote and directed the original film Mayday. Their writing credits also include The Flash and Spider-Man: Homecoming, showcasing their versatility in the genre.
The journey to bring Monopoly to the big screen has been long and winding. Discussions about a Monopoly film date back to 2007 when Ridley Scott showed interest in directing it. By 2011, Scott had enlisted Scott Alexander and Larry Karaszewski to write the script, but that project never materialized. In 2015, Lionsgate and Hasbro collaborated on another attempt with Andrew Niccol as the writer, followed by reports in 2019 that actor Kevin Hart and director Tim Story were set to be involved.
However, none of these previous efforts have come to fruition. The recent acquisition of eOne by Lionsgate from Hasbro has reignited the project, setting the stage for Daley and Goldstein to bring their creative vision to the beloved game. Fans are hopeful that this version will finally "pass Go" and make it to the theaters.
