You'll first encounter Rompopolo in Chapter 2 during Mission 2-1: Toward Fervent Fields. Once you arrive at the Oilwell Basin region, Rompopolo will make its appearance on your journey to Azuz City. Defeating it is essential to progress further in the game.
After defeating Rompopolo at least once, its entry will be added to your Large Monster Field Guide. You can then engage with Rompopolo repeatedly by either exploring the Oilwell Basin or by initiating the "Oilwell Basin Blast" Optional Quest from your Tent.

To prepare effectively for this battle, arm your hunter with water-element weapons, which you can obtain from Uth Duna in the Scarlet Forest. Additionally, equip gear with fire resistance, which can be farmed from Uth Duna (initially, only the belt and greaves) or from Ajarakan later in the chapter.
Consider crafting a fire-resistance Talisman like the Fire Charm I or a general defense charm like Defense Charm I. Before the fight, don't forget to grill a meal to boost your health and stamina.

Rompopolo, being a unique wyvern, boasts a set of distinctive attacks. Its bipedal form features saggy skin that inflates with gas, which it uses as ammunition for various gas-related attacks that can cause explosions. It can also inflict poison status ailments, so carrying Antidotes is crucial. Your Palico can help cleanse most ailments, though not always consistently.
Key attacks to be wary of include:

As with previous *Monster Hunter* games, you have the option to either capture or kill Rompopolo near the end of the battle. To capture it, weaken the monster until your Palico indicates it's "tired" (nearly dead). Then, use Shock Traps or Pitfall Traps to ensnare it, followed by at least one Tranq Bomb to knock it out, completing the capture.
Both capturing and killing Rompopolo are viable strategies, with the primary difference being the item rewards you receive. While the exact differences are yet to be confirmed, here are the potential low-rank and high-rank drops from Rompopolo:
