Netflix has been making significant strategic shifts in its gaming sector, recently unveiling a list of upcoming shows and games for the year. While this list sparked excitement with some of the announced titles, it also raised eyebrows due to the absence of several previously announced games. Notably, Netflix Games has decided to drop "Don’t Starve Together" from its mobile lineup, and it's not the only game to face this fate.
Six Games Missing from Netflix's Lineup
The streaming giant has axed six games that were initially set to be part of its mobile offerings. Fans eagerly anticipating "Don’t Starve Together," "Tales of the Shire," "Compass Point: West," "Lab Rat," "Rotwood," and "Thirsty Suitors" will have to look elsewhere for these titles. Netflix's decision to streamline its gaming portfolio reflects a broader strategy to focus on narrative-driven games and those based on its popular shows and movies, sidelining some indie titles in the process. This isn't the first instance of such a move; "Crashlands 2" was also removed from the lineup after initial beta testing in certain regions.
What About the Promised Games?
While these games won't be available through Netflix, most are still set to launch on other platforms. "Don’t Starve Together," initially announced in June 2024 as part of a trio of Klei Entertainment games headed to Netflix, will now be ported to mobile by Playdigious. The other two Klei titles, "Lab Rat" and "Rotwood," have also been dropped by Netflix, though "Rotwood" remains accessible on Steam in early access.
"Tales of the Shire: A Lord of the Rings Game," a cozy life sim, was delayed from a fall 2024 release to early 2025 and will no longer be part of Netflix's offerings, as evidenced by the removal of the Netflix Games logo from its website.
"Compass Point: West," developed by Next Games—a studio owned by Netflix—was one of the earliest titles announced for the platform, making its cancellation particularly surprising. Lastly, "Thirsty Suitors," a stylish, story-driven RPG by Outerloop Games and published by Annapurna Interactive, was meant to come to mobile via Netflix but has now been excluded.
Netflix's Evolving Gaming Strategy
This shift in focus towards games that tie into Netflix's existing content, such as the upcoming "Netflix Stories" featuring popular shows like "Ginny & Georgia" and "Sweet Magnolias," underscores a strategic pivot towards enhancing viewer engagement through interconnected content.
