Nintendo Confirms Switch 2 GameCube Controller Compatibility, Warns of Potential Issues

May 13,2025 Author: Violet

Nintendo has shed light on the compatibility issues surrounding its newly unveiled GameCube controller, stating that there might be "issues" when using it to play modern Nintendo Switch 2 games. The controller was introduced during the 60-minute Nintendo Direct earlier this month, with fine print indicating it's "only compatible with Nintendo GameCube" games available in the Nintendo Switch Online retro library, not with other Switch 2 games.

Nintendo has since elaborated on this, emphasizing that the retro controller is primarily designed for GameCube games. While it may be possible to use the GameCube controller with other Nintendo Switch 2 titles, players could encounter "some issues" due to the controller lacking "all the buttons and features" found on more contemporary controllers.

Nintendo reiterated its stance in a statement to Nintendo Life, "The Nintendo GameCube controller is designed for use with the Nintendo GameCube – Nintendo Classics collection of games and is an optional way to play those games. Since it doesn’t have all the buttons and features found in other controllers that can be used with the Nintendo Switch 2 system, there may be some issues when playing other games. The Nintendo GameCube controller can only be used on Nintendo Switch 2 and is not compatible with Nintendo Switch."

The GameCube collection significantly enhances the Nintendo Switch Online library, offering subscribers access to a plethora of classic titles from the early 2000s. Notable games available at launch this summer include The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker, F-Zero GX, and Soulcalibur 2. Nintendo plans to expand this library further, with titles like Super Mario Sunshine, Luigi's Mansion, Super Mario Strikers, and Pokemon XD: Gale of Darkness on the horizon.
