Nintendo Switch 2 Enhances User Experience with Added USB-C Port

The wait is finally over — the Nintendo Switch 2 has been officially unveiled, and with it comes a fresh look at what’s next for Nintendo’s hybrid console. Alongside redesigned Joy-Cons that now feature optical sensors capable of functioning like a mouse, the Switch 2 introduces a subtle yet significant upgrade you might have overlooked in the reveal trailer.
While the original Nintendo Switch featured just one USB-C port on its tablet-like body, the new model doubles that count by adding a second USB-C port. At first glance, this may seem like a minor tweak, but it actually marks a major leap forward in usability and accessory compatibility.
The original Switch used a single USB-C port that doubled as both a charging and data interface, often forcing users to rely on third-party adapters when connecting multiple accessories. Unfortunately, many of these unofficial adaptors caused serious issues — some even bricked the device due to incompatibility with the Switch’s unique implementation of the USB-C standard.
Despite being labeled as USB-C compliant, the original Switch employed a proprietary internal configuration that required extensive reverse-engineering from accessory manufacturers before reliable docks and peripherals could be developed.
With the inclusion of a second USB-C port on the Nintendo Switch 2, there's growing optimism that Nintendo will adopt the full USB-C specification this time around. As the universal standard continues to evolve — particularly with Thunderbolt integration offering ultra-fast data transfer, external GPU support, and 4K video output — having two properly implemented ports opens up a world of possibilities for gamers and tech enthusiasts alike.

Given how much more mature the USB-C standard has become since 2017, Nintendo’s decision to include dual ports likely signals improved support for high-speed data, power delivery, and display outputs right out of the box. This could allow players to connect external displays, storage drives, or even portable batteries without sacrificing performance or risking hardware damage.
It’s possible the bottom port will remain the primary connection point for Nintendo’s official dock, where most home console accessories will plug in. Meanwhile, the top port could serve as an alternative for fast charging, secondary display output, or mobile use — making multitasking with accessories far easier than ever before.
This dual-port design is a substantial quality-of-life improvement over the original Switch, especially for players who frequently switch between handheld and docked modes while using various peripherals.
Of course, for deeper insights into features like the mysterious C button, we’ll need to wait until Nintendo’s Switch 2 Direct presentation scheduled for April 2, 2025.
