- Nexon and Blizzard's new deal hints at Overwatch Mobile development
- Agreement centers on StarCraft publishing and development rights
- Reports suggest a possible Overwatch MOBA sequel in the works
Overwatch Mobile has long been a distant prospect, especially after Jason Schreier's book revealed Blizzard had shelved the project. However, a new agreement between Korean developer Nexon and Blizzard may revive its chances.
The deal primarily grants Nexon publishing and development rights for a new installment in the legendary StarCraft RTS series. Nexon outbid competitors like Krafton and Netmarble, securing the opportunity to steer future entries in the franchise.
More surprising are reports that the deal includes publishing rights for an Overwatch Mobile project. This suggests the mobile port is still alive, potentially as an official MOBA-style sequel.
Game Changer
Overwatch has previously ventured into the MOBA genre with Heroes of the Storm, which Blizzard heavily promoted. It's possible this rumored Overwatch Mobile MOBA could be a mobile version of Heroes of the Storm.
Alternatively, a new spin-off title seems just as plausible. However, labeling it as 'Overwatch 3' is unlikely, given the franchise's traditional focus on console and PC platforms.
Embracing its MOBA roots could revitalize Overwatch, especially with emerging competitors like Marvel Rivals gaining traction. Blizzard and its publishing partners may need bold moves to keep this iconic franchise in the spotlight.
