Play Games in Portrait Mode with New Tate Mode Mini Controller!

If you're a dedicated gamer, you've likely experienced the frustration of playing vertical arcade games on your phone in landscape mode, which often feels awkward and less immersive. Enter the innovative solution from modder Max Kern: the Tate Mode mini controller. This unique device aims to tackle the longstanding issue of playing portrait-mode games more comfortably. But does it truly address the problem?

Traditional gaming controllers are designed primarily for landscape play, similar to those used with devices like the Nintendo Switch or Steam Deck. Yet, many retro vertical shooters and classic games are best enjoyed in portrait orientation, akin to scrolling through your Instagram feed.

Max Kern, a creative modder, has developed a compact USB-C gamepad specifically tailored for portrait-mode gaming, also known as Tate mode. This controller connects directly to your phone's USB-C port, eliminating the need for Bluetooth, charging, or additional batteries.

Crafted with a Raspberry Pi RP2040 chip, the Tate Mode mini controller features a 3D-printed case and buttons, all made possible through JLCPCB. If you're interested in building one yourself, Max has generously shared a step-by-step tutorial on his YouTube channel.

What’s Your Opinion on This Tate Mode Mini Controller?

Powered by the GP2040-CE firmware, this mini controller functions as a standard HID device, making it compatible with Android, iOS, Windows, and Mac, showcasing impressive versatility despite its small size.

However, there are some practical concerns to consider. The setup might strain the USB-C port as the controller supports part of the phone's weight, potentially risking damage to the connector over time. This means you'll need to hold both the phone and the controller securely during use.

Feedback on Reddit has been mixed, with some users admiring the ingenuity while others worry about potential hand cramps and discomfort. It's important to note that this isn't a commercial product but a DIY project. Max has made all the necessary firmware and 3D print files available on Thingiverse and Github, inviting enthusiasts to try it out and share their thoughts.

What's your take on this innovative tiny gamepad? We'd love to hear your comments and opinions!
