Rumors are swirling that a Nintendo Switch 2 port of the acclaimed Red Dead Redemption 2 could be hitting the shelves by the end of 2025. Alongside this exciting news, there's talk of a next-gen upgrade for Red Dead Redemption 2 on the PS5 and Xbox Series X and S, according to GameReactor. Their sources, reportedly close to Rockstar, suggest that both the Switch 2 version and the upgrade patch might be ready as early as this year.
Adding fuel to the fire, Nintenduo echoes these claims, stating that the Switch 2 version should be released within Take-Two's current financial year, ending March 31, 2026. However, it's still up in the air whether the game will be available digitally only or if there will be a physical edition as well.
When Red Dead Redemption 2 first galloped onto the scene in 2018, we at IGN hailed it as a "masterpiece," awarding it a perfect 10/10. Our review praised it as "a meticulously polished open-world ode to the outlaw era."
The prospect of Red Dead Redemption 2 on the Switch 2 might not be too surprising, especially after Take-Two's CEO Strauss Zelnick expressed "great optimism" for Nintendo's new platform during a recent Q&A with investors. Zelnick noted that Nintendo has been more supportive of third-party publishers this time around, and Take-Two plans to launch four titles on the Switch 2, marking a significant step up from their previous engagements with Nintendo platforms.
"We're launching four titles with Nintendo Switch 2, and that's I think a bigger array of releases than we've ever offered before with a new Nintendo platform," Zelnick stated. He added that while they assess each title on a case-by-case basis, there's potential for bringing more games to the platform, including from their back catalog. While GTA 6 might not make the cut, there's a possibility for GTA V or Red Dead Redemption 2 to join the lineup.
The titles slated for the Switch 2 include Civilization 7 on launch day (June 5), the NBA 2K and WWE 2K series (with specific games and release dates yet to be announced), and Borderlands 4 on September 12. Given Take-Two's history of publishing these franchises on the original Switch, these choices aren't surprising, but Zelnick's comments hint at an open door for more exciting releases in the future.
