Possible Revival of Scalebound Development?

Scalebound, once a beacon of ambitious action gaming, promised a unique blend of dynamic combat, evocative music, and a groundbreaking bond with a colossal dragon companion. This Xbox One exclusive generated considerable excitement, only to become a casualty of the industry, its development officially halted by Microsoft in 2017 after its 2014 announcement.

Recently, however, a flicker of hope ignited. Clovers Inc.’s official X account shared a video showcasing Hideki Kamiya and his team revisiting archived Scalebound gameplay footage. Kamiya’s nostalgic reflections on the game’s creation, and his continued pride in the project despite its cancellation, were palpable. His subsequent retweet of the video, simply stating, "Come on, Phil, let's do this!", directly addressed Phil Spencer, head of Xbox, reigniting speculation about a potential revival.

This isn't a new sentiment; Kamiya expressed similar desires for a Scalebound resurgence as early as 2022, publicly stating his willingness to discuss a resumption of development with Microsoft. While rumors of a Scalebound reboot surged in early 2023, fueled by various sources, Microsoft remained officially silent. Phil Spencer’s response to a question about Scalebound in an interview with Game Watch—a simple smile and "I have nothing to add at this time"—neither confirmed nor denied the possibility.

Even with renewed interest from Microsoft, a swift return of Scalebound is unlikely. Hideki Kamiya and Clovers Inc. are currently immersed in developing a new Okami installment. Any Scalebound revival would necessitate the completion of these current projects before development could begin. Despite the years of silence, the persistent hope surrounding Scalebound remains—a testament to the game's enduring appeal and the possibility that players might one day finally experience what was once lost.
