The Samsung 990 Evo Plus is an outstanding choice for both gaming PCs and PlayStation 5 consoles. It surpasses Sony's minimum speed recommendation for the PS5, delivering sequential read speeds of up to 7,250 MB/s and write speeds of up to 6,300 MB/s. While it's faster than the non-Pro 990 Evo, it doesn't quite match the speed of the 990 Pro. The key difference is that the 990 Evo Plus is a DRAM-less drive, but this doesn't affect PS5 performance. For gaming PCs, it utilizes HMB (host memory buffer) to compensate for the lack of DRAM, using a negligible amount of your system's RAM. As a result, gamers won't notice any performance difference compared to the 990 Pro.
The Samsung 990 Evo Plus does not come with a preinstalled heatsink. However, its new single-sided design is power-efficient and generates less heat than older SSDs. This means it should work perfectly in a PS5 without thermal throttling, and you likely won't need a heatsink. If you want extra peace of mind, adding a heatsink is an option, but it comes at an additional cost of about $7.
