In a revealing interview with Vanity Fair, Sebastian Stan opened up about his career challenges before landing the iconic role of the Winter Soldier in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Stan credits a $65,000 residuals payment from his role in the 2010 film Hot Tub Time Machine as a lifeline during a time when he was struggling to find work.
"I was actually struggling with work," Stan admitted. "I had just gotten off the phone with my business manager, who told me I was saved by $65,000 that came in residuals from Hot Tub Time Machine."
Stan portrayed the antagonist Blaine in the sci-fi comedy before joining the MCU as James "Bucky" Barnes in 2011's Captain America: The First Avenger, where he starred alongside Chris Evans.
MCU chief Kevin Feige expressed his confidence in Stan's potential for the role, despite his relative obscurity at the time. "You could see that he has so much inside him and so much behind his eyes. I’ll never forget that," Feige told Vanity Fair. He shared his foresight with producer Stephen Broussard, saying, "He’s going to be a good Bucky, but he’s going to be a great Winter Soldier."
Since then, Stan has reprised his role in numerous MCU projects, including Captain America: The Winter Soldier (2014), Captain America: Civil War (2016), several Avengers films, and this year's Captain America: Brave New World. Fans can also look forward to seeing him in next month's Thunderbolts. His continued presence in the MCU was confirmed with his inclusion in the cast reveal for Avengers: Doomsday, ensuring that Bucky Barnes will remain a key figure in the Marvel universe for the foreseeable future.
