Key Choices in Avowed: Deciding the Fate of Eothas' Splinter
Jul 30,2025Author: Matthew
Deciding whether to hand over the Splinter of Eothas to Sargamis is a pivotal early choice in Avowed, with outcomes ranging from favorable to disastrous. This Avowed guide details the consequences of giving Sargamis the Splinter of Eothas.
What Happens If You Keep the Splinter of Eothas from Sargamis in Avowed?
Sargamis makes it clear that refusing to give him the Splinter will lead to conflict, and he’s not bluffing. If you withhold the Splinter, Sargamis becomes a formidable optional boss in Avowed, complete with a unique name and a substantial health bar, making this one of the tougher early-game battles.
During the fight, Sargamis summons two spirit creatures that primarily target Kai, leaving you mostly unbothered. His sword thrusts cover significant ground quickly, but he’s vulnerable to freezing. Equip ice spells to slow his movements and gain an edge.
Defeating Sargamis rewards you with the Last Light of Day mace, a unique weapon that restores three percent of your health per enemy defeated and boosts attacks with 10 percent bonus fire damage.
What Happens If You Hand Over the Splinter of Eothas to Sargamis in Avowed?
Agreeing to give Sargamis the Splinter opens two main paths—three if you count reneging, which prompts him to attack. You can persuade Sargamis to enter the statue himself, resulting in his death and earning you the Last Light of Day. Alternatively, offering yourself for the statue leads to another branching decision.
Follow Sargamis’ instructions to stand in the circle and let him activate the machine. This leads to your death but unlocks the “Get In The Statue, Envoy” achievement. Reloading Avowed returns you to the moment before stepping into the circle.
If you step out of the circle when Sargamis tells you to stay put, he’ll attack in a fit of rage.

How to Complete Dawntreader Without Killing Sargamis in Avowed
The optimal approach to the Splinter of Eothas dilemma is convincing Sargamis his plan is doomed, though it requires effort. You’ll need an Intellect stat of at least 4 to unlock these dialogue options. Refer to our Avowed respec guide to adjust your attributes if needed. Place the Splinter in the statue before speaking to Sargamis, activate the machine, and then discuss its failure with him to persuade him to abandon his plan.
Based on our playthrough, selecting the Court Augur or Arcane Scholar backgrounds unlocks this path, though other backgrounds may offer similar unique choices. Persist in convincing Sargamis that Eothas is gone, but avoid the intellect-based option about live soul transfer to stay on track.
After Sargamis departs, choose whether to let the voice use the statue or destroy it yourself. Then, find Sargamis in his quarters for a final conversation. This completes the Dawntreader quest segment, yielding more experience than fighting or surrendering the Splinter.
That covers whether to give the Splinter of Eothas to Sargamis in Avowed. For those starting Obsidian’s new RPG, check out our Avowed beginner’s guide for essential tips.
