It's rare for me to express true astonishment in writing, but I think I speak for most people when I say I was shocked to learn that Tribe Nine is set to be shuttered. According to a recent announcement, the servers will be shut off on November 27th, and any upcoming updates have been cancelled. Additionally, the game will reach its end of service (EOS), with paid Enigma Entities being refunded and in-game purchases halted.
This marks an acrimonious end for Tribe Nine, a game that just a couple of months ago celebrated surpassing ten million downloads. Inspired by the anime series of the same name and featuring art by Danganronpa veteran Rui Komatsuzaki, the game combined regular action RPG gameplay with the unique Xtreme Baseball boss battles that fans of the series will recognize.
The abrupt cancellation of Tribe Nine adds to a troubling trend over the last few years, where numerous games have been discontinued within less than a year of their launch. For fans of these titles, it can feel disheartening to invest in new releases, given the looming threat of an EOS announcement.
TribelessGiven that Rui Komatsuzaki's art has been well-received in other games like Hundred Line -Last Defence Academy-, there seems little justification for Tribe Nine's cancellation on this platform. However, being discontinued so soon after its launch could have negative repercussions for developer Akatsuki Games.
With another anime-based game, Kaiju No.8: The Game, on the horizon, Akatsuki Games is likely hoping to attract fans of the existing series. Yet, casual players might hesitate, considering the company's track record and the risk of another early termination. For fans of Tribe Nine, this news certainly doesn't make for a happy Friday.
