Fans eagerly awaiting the next installment of the beloved The Witcher series will have to adjust their expectations, as developer CD Projekt Red has officially announced that The Witcher 4 will not be hitting the shelves in 2026. This news comes directly from the studio’s fiscal year 2024 earnings presentation, where they highlighted their financial goals and incentive programs but made it clear that the game's release is not on the immediate horizon.
No Specific Release Window Yet
During the Q&A session following the earnings presentation, CD Projekt Red's Chief Financial Officer, Piotr Nielubowicz, reiterated that the studio is not ready to announce a precise launch date for The Witcher 4. He stated, "We are not going to announce the precise launch date for the game yet. All we could share now to give more visibility to investors is that the game will not be launched within the time frame of the first target for the incentive program, which ends December 31, 2026." This leaves fans in anticipation but without a clear timeline for the game's release.
Full Speed Ahead In Production
Despite the delay, The Witcher 4 is making significant strides in its development. The game, codenamed Project Polaris, has entered "full production," according to CD Projekt’s Q3 financial update from last year. Nielubowicz expressed his optimism about the project's progress, saying, "Of all our projects, this one [Project Polaris/The Witcher 4] is currently the most far along, and we're starting the most intensive phase of development. I wish to thank the team for its effort and I'm keeping my fingers crossed for further progress."
First unveiled as Project Polaris in 2022, The Witcher 4 (stylized as The Witcher IV) made a splash at The Game Awards 2024 with a six-minute cinematic trailer. This new chapter in the series will shift the focus from the iconic Geralt of Rivia to his adoptive daughter, Ciri, who steps into the limelight as the protagonist. Now older and more mature, Ciri is set to follow in her predecessor’s footsteps, promising a fresh yet familiar experience for fans of the franchise.
CD Projekt has also shared plans for a new trilogy within the Witcher universe. Following The Witcher 4, two more titles, currently known as Project Canis Majoris and Project Orion, are slated for release within a six-year window after the launch of The Witcher 4. This ambitious roadmap ensures that fans will have plenty more adventures in the world of The Witcher to look forward to.
