Nintendo has enlisted the charismatic actor Paul Rudd to generate excitement for the Nintendo Switch 2 through a new commercial that playfully nods to a memorable 90s ad he starred in for the Super Nintendo. This nostalgic journey back to 1991 showcases Rudd, sporting a distinctive long black jacket, beaded necklace, and a uniquely styled hairdo, confidently strutting into a drive-in movie theater with his SNES. He connects the console to the big screen and immerses himself in classics like The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past, F-Zero, and Sim City, attracting a captivated audience around him. The commercial culminates with the iconic SNES slogan: "Now you're playing with power."
Paul Rudd, from the new Nintendo Switch 2 commercial
Fast forward to the present, and Paul Rudd, seemingly ageless, dons the same iconic attire in a new commercial for the Nintendo Switch 2. This time, he marches into a living room and sets up the new console to play Mario Kart World alongside comedians Joe Lo Truglio and Jordan Carlos, plus a young kid who refers to him as "Uncle Paul." They utilize the system's innovative GameChat feature, all while playfully ribbing Rudd about his retro outfit and the theatrical flair of the original commercial, complete with a fog machine and a fan to recreate the 90s vibe. The commercial humorously shifts the slogan to "Now we're playing together," embracing the communal aspect of gaming. The ad is delightfully cheesy, yet it successfully celebrates the nostalgia of the original while showcasing the new system's features.
IGN had the privilege of interviewing Rudd about his experience filming this sequel commercial over three decades after the first. Rudd shared amusing details, like the possibility that he wore his own beaded necklace in the original ad, and how he couldn't resist playing Mario Kart World on set between takes. Sadly, he wasn't allowed to take a Nintendo Switch 2 home. You can watch the full interview here:
