Killer Instinct Gold Joins Nintendo Switch Online Library

May 19,2025 Author: Hannah

Killer Instinct Gold, a beloved classic from the Nintendo 64 era, has now been added to the Nintendo Switch Online library, bringing a wave of nostalgia to gamers. This title is a port of the iconic arcade fighter Killer Instinct 2, joining its predecessor, the original Killer Instinct, in the ever-growing catalog of retro games accessible to Nintendo Switch Online Expansion Pack subscribers.

Originally released in 1996, Killer Instinct Gold was crafted by the renowned British studio Rare, which was a prominent second-party developer for Nintendo at the time. Rare's portfolio during this period included masterpieces such as Donkey Kong Country, Goldeneye 007, and Perfect Dark. In Killer Instinct Gold, players can choose from a lineup of 10 fierce fighters and engage in various game modes, utilizing an extensive array of moves and devastating combos.

Interestingly, Rare, along with the Killer Instinct franchise, is now under the ownership of Microsoft. This makes Killer Instinct Gold another Xbox Game Studios title to grace the Nintendo Switch platform. Since the launch of the Xbox One's Killer Instinct in 2013, there has been no official word from Microsoft about a potential revival of the series with a new sequel.

Nintendo Switch Online is a subscription service that enhances the gaming experience on the Nintendo Switch. Subscribers gain access to online multiplayer features, enabling them to play with or against friends, and a vast collection of classic Nintendo games from across four decades. This library includes titles from the NES, SNES, Game Boy, Nintendo 64, and will soon expand to include the new GameCube libraries with the launch of the Nintendo Switch 2. A free seven-day trial is available for those interested in exploring the service.

Preorders for the Nintendo Switch 2 opened at the end of April, with the console priced at $449.99. The demand was as high as anticipated, and although Nintendo has issued a warning to U.S. customers about potential delays in release date delivery due to overwhelming demand, Nintendo of America's president, Doug Bowser, expressed confidence to IGN that the company would have sufficient units to meet consumer demand through the holidays.
