Ubisoft Restarts Project Maverick Development: Rumors

May 14,2025 Author: Savannah

The extraction shooter set in the Far Cry universe, originally set in Alaska, has undergone a complete reboot, according to a report from Insider Gaming. Initially known as Project Maverick, this title was planned as a multiplayer expansion for Far Cry 7. However, after an internal review and despite positive feedback from employees and testers, Ubisoft's management decided to shift resources to Project Blackbird (Far Cry 7). The final blow to the multiplayer component came with the reassignment of the technical team to other projects.

The project's responsibility has now been transferred to Ubisoft Sherbrooke, a studio renowned for its development support capabilities. Almost the entire original development team has been reassigned to work on the next installment of Far Cry.

According to insider Tom Henderson (as of mid-December 2024), Far Cry 7 is set to immerse players in an atmosphere of tension and desperation, with time as the primary adversary. The game's narrative will center around the protagonist's family being kidnapped by a mysterious conspiracy cult, who are conducting terrifying experiments with hallucinogens on animals and children. Players will be tasked with rescuing their loved ones within a strict 72 in-game hour time limit, which translates to 24 real-time hours. This time constraint will make the clock a pivotal gameplay element, intensifying the urgency of the mission.

A key feature of Far Cry 7 will be a timer displayed on the protagonist's wristwatch, constantly reminding players of the ticking clock. This mechanic will not only increase the sense of urgency but also pressure players into making rapid and strategic decisions. Far Cry 7 aims to offer a unique gaming experience where every second counts, and each decision can have profound consequences.
