MCU Star Challenges Thunderbolts Skeptics: 'Prepare to Eat Your Words'

Wyatt Russell, known for his role as U.S. Agent in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, is determined to silence the skeptics surrounding the upcoming film Thunderbolts. In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Russell expressed the collective ambition of the cast to transform any doubts into admiration for their project. He credited his competitive ice hockey background as a driving force in this endeavor.

"We approached this film as a team, intent on crafting something unique and exceptional, aiming to prove the naysayers wrong," Russell stated. "With my athletic history, I'm motivated to show that this movie will exceed expectations and compel those who doubted it to reconsider."

Russell emphasized that Thunderbolts presents a unique challenge because it does not rely on the established backstories of its characters. Unlike the Avengers, who benefited from individual origin films, Thunderbolts features a roster of anti-heroes who are less familiar to audiences.

The film boasts a talented ensemble, including Florence Pugh as Yelena Belova, Sebastian Stan as Bucky Barnes, Olga Kurylenko as Antonia Dreykov/Taskmaster, Lewis Pullman as Bob/Sentry/Void, David Harbour as Alexei Shostakov/Red Guardian, Hannah John-Kamen as Ava Starr/Ghost, and Wyatt Russell reprising his role as John Walker/U.S. Agent.

"There's a lack of extensive backstory for these characters within the Marvel universe," Russell explained. "This isn't about Captain America, Thor, Iron Man, or the Avengers. Thunderbolts focuses on these misfits, and that's the challenge Kevin Feige set for director Jake Schreier and our cast. It's a challenge we're eager to meet head-on."

Russell also highlighted the diverse career paths of his co-stars, noting that many did not achieve fame through mainstream avenues. "Most of us didn't start our careers in blockbuster films," he said. "I spent years on obscure TV shows, David Harbour has a rich history in Broadway, and Sebastian Stan had a successful career before joining Marvel, continuing to diversify his roles beyond it. Florence Pugh, too, has carved her own path."

The Thunderbolts: The Tumultuous History of Marvel's Twisted Super-Team

View 11 ImagesIn a recent interview with Vanity Fair, Sebastian Stan shared insights into his career struggles before landing the role of the Winter Soldier in the MCU. He revealed a pivotal moment when a $65,000 residuals payment from his role in the 2010 film Hot Tub Time Machine provided crucial financial relief.

"I was really struggling to find work," Stan admitted. "That residuals check from Hot Tub Time Machine was a lifesaver."

Stan's portrayal of James "Bucky" Barnes began with Captain America: The First Avenger in 2011 alongside Chris Evans. He has since reprised the role in several films, including Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Captain America: Civil War, multiple Avengers movies, and the recent Captain America: Brave New World. He is set to return as the Winter Soldier in the upcoming Thunderbolts film.

Stan's involvement in the MCU extends further, with his name featured in the cast reveal for Marvel's Avengers: Doomsday, suggesting a continued presence for Bucky and other Thunderbolts members, including John Walker, in future Marvel projects.
