Today's article is packed with reviews, new releases, and some tempting sales. Let's dive in!
Reviews & Mini-Views
Ace Attorney Investigations Collection ($39.99)

The Nintendo Switch has given us second chances at many classic titles, and now the Ace Attorney Investigations Collection brings us Miles Edgeworth's previously unlocalized adventures. This collection builds upon previous storylines, with the second game enhancing the first. Shifting the perspective to the prosecution offers a fresh take on the familiar gameplay mechanics: clue-finding, witness interrogation, and case-solving. While the pacing differs from the main Ace Attorney series, the unique presentation and Edgeworth's character make it engaging. If the first game feels slow, persevere – the second is significantly better.

Bonus features include an art and music gallery, a story mode, and the option to toggle between original and updated visuals/soundtracks. A helpful dialogue history feature is also included. The collection offers a compelling contrast between the two games, making it a highly recommended package for Ace Attorney fans. With this release, nearly every Ace Attorney game is now available on the Switch.

Gimmick! 2 ($24.99)

A sequel to the obscure NES title Gimmick! is a surprising yet welcome addition. Developed by Bitwave Games, Gimmick! 2 stays true to the original's challenging physics-based platforming. Six lengthy levels will test your skills, but an easier mode is available for those seeking a less demanding experience. Yumetaro's star attack remains a versatile tool for combat and puzzle-solving. Collectibles unlock customization options, adding replay value.

The game's difficulty is comparable to the original, but generous checkpoints mitigate frustration. The charming visuals and music enhance the experience. Gimmick! 2 is a strong sequel that successfully builds upon its predecessor's strengths. Platforming enthusiasts who enjoy a challenge will find this game rewarding.

Valfaris: Mecha Therion ($19.99)

Valfaris: Mecha Therion takes a bold step, shifting from the original's action-platforming to a shoot 'em up style. While the Switch's hardware might limit the visual fidelity, the intense action, soundtrack, and visuals still deliver an enjoyable experience. The weapon system, featuring a gun, melee weapon, and rotating third weapon, adds strategic depth. Mastering the weapon cycle and defensive maneuvers is key to success.

While different from its predecessor, Mecha Therion retains the original's distinct atmosphere. It avoids many common pitfalls of the genre. While performance might be better on other platforms, the Switch version provides a satisfying shoot 'em up experience.
SwitchArcade Score: 4/5
Umamusume: Pretty Derby – Party Dash ($44.99)

This licensed game caters heavily to fans of the Umamusume franchise. The writing and meta-systems will resonate with existing fans. However, the limited number of repetitive mini-games might not hold much appeal for newcomers. While the presentation is strong, the gameplay lacks depth for those unfamiliar with the source material.

Even for fans, the emphasis on fan service might overshadow the overall experience. The abundance of unlockables could provide some longevity, but the limited gameplay might lead to quick burnout.
SwitchArcade Score: 3/5
Sunsoft is Back! Retro Game Selection ($9.99)

This collection showcases a lesser-known side of Sunsoft's library, featuring three charming 8-bit titles. The package includes Firework Thrower Kantaro’s 53 Stations of the Tokaido, Ripple Island, and The Wing of Madoola. All three games are fully localized for the first time, a noteworthy achievement. The collection includes save states, rewind, display options, and art galleries.

The games themselves offer a varied experience. 53 Stations can be frustrating, while Ripple Island is a solid adventure game, and The Wing of Madoola is an ambitious but uneven title. While not groundbreaking, these games offer a unique glimpse into Sunsoft's history and are recommended for fans of retro gaming and obscure titles.
