Creative director Jonathan Dumont recently shared insights into the time investment required for Assassin's Creed Shadows, estimating that completing the core storyline would take around 30 to 40 hours. Delving into all the optional content could add another 30 to 40 hours, bringing the total playtime to approximately 80 hours. This revelation came during an interview with journalist Genki, providing players with a clearer idea of what to expect in terms of engagement.
While Dumont previously compared Shadows to earlier titles like Origins, Odyssey, and Valhalla, he noted that these games varied significantly in length, making such comparisons less meaningful. Recognizing the challenge of quantifying open-world experiences, he clarified that Shadows aligns more closely with the scale of Origins. According to How Long To Beat, Origins typically requires around 30 hours for the main campaign, with perfectionists potentially clocking in over 80 hours.

For those wary of overly extensive gameplay, Shadows seems to strike a more balanced approach compared to Valhalla, which has faced criticism for its demanding 60-hour main story and potential 150-hour commitment when factoring in all content. If Dumont’s estimates hold true, Shadows promises a satisfying yet manageable experience.
Mark your calendars—Assassin's Creed Shadows launches on March 20th for PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X|S.
