Nintendo made a splash with its April Direct by revealing the full details of the upcoming Switch 2, and ever since, fans have been eagerly waiting for preorders to go live in the U.S. While the console’s price tag wasn’t too shocking, what did raise eyebrows was the news about the cost of first-party Switch 2 games at launch. One standout example is *Mario Kart World*, which will retail at $80 on its own. That’s quite a jump compared to previous generations.
In addition to higher-priced games, Nintendo is also launching a new lineup of Switch 2 accessories, many of which carry increased prices compared to their original Switch counterparts—even more so than previously announced.
One of the more notable accessories is the brand-new Switch 2 Pro controller, now priced at a steep $85. If you already own multiple Switch Pro controllers like I do, this price hike may be off-putting. Fortunately, Nintendo confirmed during a developer interview that the original Switch Pro controller will work perfectly with the Switch 2, eliminating the need to upgrade right away.
Where You Can Still Buy Original Switch Pro Controllers

While some players might want to jump on the new Switch 2 Pro controller bandwagon, it's definitely not required for most gameplay experiences. If you already own a Switch Pro controller, there’s no urgent reason to upgrade—especially when you can save $85 for new games instead. For those who don’t yet own a Pro controller but are planning to get the Switch 2, the original Switch Pro controller remains a more affordable option currently priced at $69.99.
That said, availability could become an issue. As the Switch 2 launch date approaches, older stock might sell out to make room for the newer model. Amazon, for instance, has limited original Pro controller inventory and is mostly offering third-party alternatives at the moment. It’s worth noting that in addition to supporting the original Switch Pro controller, Nintendo has also confirmed compatibility with the original Joy-Con controllers. However, for most gaming scenarios, we still recommend the Pro controller over Joy-Cons for better performance and comfort.
When Will the Switch 2 Pro Controller Be Available?

If you're specifically interested in the new Switch 2 Pro controller, you’ll need to wait until the console officially launches. The controller will debut alongside the Switch 2 on June 5. Preorders for the console—and likely the official accessories—are expected to open on April 24. Keep in mind that the Switch 2 Pro controller will only function with the new Switch 2, so it won’t be compatible with the original Switch.
Retail listings for the Switch 2 Pro controller have already begun appearing online at major retailers like Walmart and Best Buy, although preorder dates haven't been posted just yet. Walmart’s listing also includes information about upcoming Switch 2 game preorders, giving fans a sneak peek at what’s coming next.
