The full cast of Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 has been revealed, featuring seven fully playable characters and one dedicated to exploration. Meet Monoco and Esquie, the latest additions to the 33rd expedition.

Monoco, the "friendly and bloodthirsty Gestral," enjoys combat and views competition as a form of meditation. This character can transform into defeated enemies, adding a unique twist to combat by harnessing the powers of fallen foes. Unaffected by the Paintress' power, Monoco joined the expedition, eager for future battles.

Esquie, a living legend known as the oldest and strongest being in the world, takes a supportive role in combat. This character grants the team access to various locations across the open world map. Collecting Esquie's special stones unlocks new abilities and opens up previously inaccessible areas.

Previously, the other playable characters—Gustave, Lune, Maelle, Sciel, Renoir, and Verso—were introduced in a YouTube video on October 16, 2024. Despite their differing personalities and motivations, these characters unite to end the cycle of death.

Turn-Based Combat Innovation and Deep Character Customization

Sandfall Interactive aims to elevate Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 beyond its stunning visuals by revitalizing and reimagining classic turn-based RPG combat, as highlighted in an Xbox Wire article dated January 23, 2025.

"We didn't want the game to just be a pretty face," stated CEO and creative director Guillaume Broche. "We wanted it to feel like a real game, where each character has a distinct playstyle, offering numerous ways to engage with them. They feel different from one another, with unique mechanics and skill trees."

To achieve this, Sandfall Interactive integrated a real-time element into the turn-based combat system, allowing players to dodge enemy attacks or deal massive damage through parrying. Characters can unleash more potent attacks by pressing specific buttons. This innovative approach is called the reactive turn-based system. Players who prefer less demanding timing can adjust the difficulty settings to modify the parry and dodge windows, ensuring an enjoyable experience at any skill level.

Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 offers extensive character customization options. Each character features unique mechanics and skill trees, such as Lune’s ability to accumulate "Stain," which enhances her abilities. Players can also acquire Luminas, passive effects gained by evolving "Pictos," modifiers linked to equipment, after four battles. Turning Pictos into Luminas makes these effects permanent, offering endless possibilities for character development.

With deep character customization and the reactive turn-based system, players can experiment with hundreds of builds to find a playstyle that suits them best. This fresh take on turn-based combat challenges not only strategic thinking but also reflexes, promising a dynamic and engaging gameplay experience.
