Should You Fight Lu Bu in Dynasty Warriors: Origins?

Challenging Lu Bu in *Dynasty Warriors: Origins* is a daunting prospect. From personal experience, it took over an hour to conquer this legendary warrior. However, there are compelling reasons to take on this challenge. Firstly, defeating Lu Bu grants you bragging rights; it's a true test of skill and a badge of honor. Secondly, depending on your allegiance to Shu or Wei, you might be forced to confront him during the Battle of Xiapi in Chapter 4. Lastly, triumphing over Lu Bu at the Battle of Hulao Gate not only earns you the prestigious "The Strongest" trophy but also unlocks the game's final weapon, the halberd, in the post-game. These incentives make the battle against Lu Bu highly rewarding.

Lu Bu’s First Phase

Before engaging Lu Bu, it's crucial to equip yourself with the right gear. A weapon capable of delivering multiple hits and staggering him, such as a sword, is essential. Additionally, select Battle Arts that require minimal Bravery, activate quickly, and cover a wide range. In my battle against Lu Bu, I used Falcon Flurry, Mad Blade Rush, Absconding Slash, and Flying Dragon Slash. Accessories that boost your health and defense, like Divine Bird’s Wing and Divine Turtle’s Shell, are vital to withstand his powerful attacks. Finally, choose a weapon with a skill that grants Bravery for each Perfect Evade, as this will be your primary source of Bravery during the fight.

In *Dynasty Warriors: Origins*, Lu Bu typically starts the battle mounted on Red Hare. During this initial phase, he charges around the battlefield on his steed. Although swift, he pauses occasionally to rest, providing an opportunity to strike with your Battle Arts before retreating. His attacks have a limited area of effect, except when Red Hare leaps and crashes down, making them relatively easy to dodge. Once his health drops to 80%, Lu Bu dismounts, signaling the start of the true battle.

Lu Bu’s Second Phase

On foot, Lu Bu becomes even more formidable. His attacks are rapid and he moves swiftly across the battlefield. When enveloped in a red aura, he cannot be staggered or interrupted during his combos. Evade his charges, which come in sets of three, and be cautious if he charges without his spear, as he aims to grab you, causing significant damage. However, these grabs are easily evaded like his other charges.

His most lethal move is signaled by an orange glow, followed by three volleys of massive arrows that can juggle and decimate your health. To counter this, use a Battle Art like Absconding Slash, which can interrupt him from a distance. Close-quarters Battle Arts like Palm Strike are too risky and likely to result in your demise. Keep your Musou gauge charged for emergencies, as it grants temporary invincibility, crucial for surviving missteps or being caught in his combos.

Despite his ferocity, Lu Bu can be juggled effectively during this phase. Continuous attacks will quickly charge your Battle Arts and deplete his Fortitude meter. Staying close allows for quicker reactions to his moves. Remember, evasion is key.

Lu Bu’s Final Phase

When Lu Bu's health is sufficiently depleted, he enters Musou Rage, marking the beginning of the final phase. Now unstaggeable, he unleashes a relentless barrage of attacks. Your objective is to break his Fortitude before he executes his Musou Attack. Use all your remaining resources – Musou attacks, Battle Arts, and rapid strikes. If he completes his Musou Attack, he'll immediately reactivate it, forcing you to restart the phase. Successfully breaking his Fortitude here will allow you to finally defeat Lu Bu.

And that's how you conquer Lu Bu in *Dynasty Warriors: Origins*! The game is available on PS5, PC, and Xbox Series X/S.
