Favreau's Oswald Rabbit Series Coming to Disney+

Jon Favreau, a veteran of Disney filmmaking, is teaming up with the House of Mouse to bring Oswald the Lucky Rabbit to Disney+ in a new series. According to a Deadline report, Favreau will leverage his expertise in both live-action and animation to create this TV show, serving as both writer and producer. While plot details and casting remain under wraps, this project promises a fresh take on the classic animated icon.
Oswald's history with Disney is unique. Created by Walt Disney himself, this early mascot starred in only 26 silent cartoons (1927-1928) before a rights dispute led to his departure and the subsequent creation of Mickey Mouse. As detailed in our in-depth exploration of Disney's 100-year history, this period proved pivotal in shaping the company's trajectory. Disney reacquired the rights to Oswald in 2006 and released a new short featuring the character in 2022, marking his first appearance in 95 years. This new series signals a significant commitment to Oswald's continued presence within the Disney universe. Although a release date is yet to be announced, the project is expected to debut sometime in the future.
Favreau's involvement with this project comes amidst his extensive work on other Disney properties. He's a key figure in the Star Wars universe, contributing to *The Mandalorian*, *Skeleton Crew*, and *Ahsoka*. His contributions to the Marvel Cinematic Universe span 15 years, both in front of and behind the camera, including directing the 2019 *Lion King* remake. He's also set to direct *The Mandalorian* and Grogu's theatrical release in 2026.
While Oswald's return under the Disney banner is significant, it's worth noting that 2023 saw the release of Oswald: Down the Rabbit Hole, a horror film starring Ernie Hudson, showcasing a very different interpretation of the character.
