Fresh enthusiasm has reignited around the long-rumored Final Fantasy 9 remake, following the launch of an official *Final Fantasy 9* 25th Anniversary website by Square Enix.
The site—currently available only in Japanese—highlights the original release date of Final Fantasy 9, which was July 7, 2000, confirming that this year marks its 25th anniversary. The announcement reads: “We are preparing various projects, including merchandise and collaborations to commemorate the 25th anniversary, so please look forward to it!”
While seemingly straightforward, this message—and the very existence of a dedicated anniversary page—has led many fans to speculate that a Final Fantasy 9 remake may finally be on the horizon.
Notably, the timing of the website’s release coincides with growing anticipation for Nintendo’s upcoming Switch 2-focused Direct presentation scheduled for April 2. Fans are now wondering whether Square Enix might use the event to officially unveil a Final Fantasy 9 remake tailored for the new platform.
Of course, there's no concrete confirmation yet. The mention of "various projects" could easily refer to limited-edition merchandise or promotional tie-ins. But for hopeful fans, every clue fuels further excitement.
Last year, Final Fantasy XIV producer Naoki "Yoshi-P" Yoshida briefly touched upon the topic when asked about the potential for a Final Fantasy 9 remake. He noted that the game’s sheer size would make remaking it a complex undertaking.
“Of course, I do know there are requests for Final Fantasy 9 to be made, but when you think about Final Fantasy 9, it’s a game with huge volume,” Yoshi-P explained. “When you think about all of that volume, I wonder if it’s possible to remake that as a single title. It’s a difficult one. It is a tough question.”
He also hinted that—if developed—a Final Fantasy 9 remake might follow the multi-part structure of Final Fantasy 7 Remake, which is being released as a trilogy.
Earlier in 2024, Yoshi-P unveiled Final Fantasy 9-inspired content coming to Final Fantasy XIV as part of the Dawntrail expansion. This includes themed Collector’s Edition bonuses such as the Ark summon mount and a wind-up Princess Garnet (also known as Dagger) minion. Pre-ordering Dawntrail grants players a Zidane-themed wind-up minion, referencing the series' iconic protagonist.
During a panel at PAX East where these additions were announced, Yoshi-P cryptically added, “You may have noticed a lot of Final Fantasy 9 references here, but the reason is a secret.” He then mimed zipping his lips, sparking more speculation.

Rumors surrounding a Final Fantasy 9 remake first gained traction after it appeared on a list of unannounced titles in the 2021 Nvidia leak. That list—which Nvidia confirmed was authentic, though potentially outdated—included several Square Enix games later announced or released, such as the Chrono Cross remaster, Kingdom Hearts 4, and the Final Fantasy 7 Remake for PC.
However, both Final Fantasy 9 remake and Final Fantasy Tactics—also listed in the leak—remain unreleased.
Just months before the Nvidia revelation, in June 2021, it was reported that an animated series based on Final Fantasy 9 was in early development. Unfortunately, there has been no update regarding that project since.
Next month, 22 titles will exit the PlayStation Plus game library. Notable departures include Grand Theft Auto 5, Payday 2: Crimewave Edition, and the final accessible versions of first-party classics Resistance: Fall of Man and Resistance 2.PlayStat
